Hi family! Just to let you know that our Littlest One - - Joni - - is running the Ragnar tomorrow and Saturday. Feel free to call and cheer her on! Her group begins at 4 p.m. on Friday. She runs at 6 p.m. on Friday, during the middle of the night, not sure of the next time, but she is the last runner. . . .crossing the finishe line Sat. afternoon. We are sad that we don't get to see it. The spectator thing is very limited this year! She will be in our hearts and prayers, right? Go Joni Go! You are awesome! Loves and kisses! xoxox Mom

Happy Mother's Day All!

Happy Mother's Day to all you mothers! I hope your day was made very special. Mine was spent with both our families and made delightful by all involved. Lee's rotation is at a hospital were he gets food from the awesome cafeteria and he has been bringing me my favorite drinks all week! Then he took Graham to the store with him and they picked out a bouquet of white roses and yellow mum, so fresh and pretty on my table! On Thursday Graham brought home a bouquet of hand-painted tulips from egg cartons for my "mah-ders day!"

With the flowers came a note. This is what it said:

This is to Certify that my mom is the greatest!

Here's why: "because she gives me lots of grapes and food. She gives me green beans, and I love those!"

Love, GA...a...m"

(He signed his own name!)

We spent church and a mother's day luncheon with the Graham Fam. Graham's Primary class facilitated a gift for me too; a rose and a note. Here are Graham's responses to the prompts on the note:

Luncheon with the Graham was super. It was phenomenal food, including a lime-ice drink, salmon smothered in lime n butter sauted onions, vegi kabobs, a beautiful salad and bruccetta for the 3rd year running! We were pretty stuffed by the time we got to the Ragsdales!

Grandpa Ragsdale is just a little boy in a big body and loves his grandkids!

He comes up with the best activities!

The White Stork Is Coming

Emma's Baptism

My littlest sister, Emma Jane Graham, was baptized a few weeks ago. She happily chose to take this important step to become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints and has started down the path that leads us all back to live with our Heavenly Father.
Way to go Emma! She looked so beautiful.

The Fort Worth Botanical Gardens has a butterfly exhibit going on right now that is spectacular. Hey family....most of you probably know that Jodi and I took a quick trip down to Phoenix to see the best band in the whole world, and my personal favorite....U2.......it was amazing....the best show I have ever seen, and I've seen them a few times. The Black Eyed Peas opened for them...and they were great as well. They played in front of 90,000 people at Cardinal stadium...and we were about 12 feet from the stage...so I got some great footage of Bono, Edge, Larry, and Adam....thought I'd share them with you.....all great songs, and good vibes everywhere.....good times.. Mom was good enough to come down and spent the night with the kids, so we are most grateful to her.....this Sunday they will be playing their concert live from the Rose Bowl on You Tube.....

mary, nelson and i went on a fun outing to the pumpkin patch with my friend heidi's preschool class. it was fabulous! it cost $3 a person and you got to pick ANY size pumpkin you wanted! so naturally nelson picked one that seriously weighed 50 pounds. i'm serious...i had to carry it back to the hayride! i think it was over half as tall as he was! makes me want to eat donuts and drink cider.

Evelyn's Birth

It has been a while, but I felt like I couldn't post until I could post the thing that any interested readers would really like to hear. So finally, here is Evelyn Rose Ragsdale's birth story. If you would like to read my doula's account click here. If you cringe while reading words such as "contraction" or "vagina" beware!

Dear Evelyn,

It was over Christmas break at the Rivendell cabin in Wyoming when I missed my period. Daddy and I had to work to hide our excitement! Within a month, I had to work to keep my belly hidden! I avoided visiting family too much because every time I did, someone would ask. Aunt Kayla, Uncle Bo, and Aunt Emma were especially perceptive. Our goal was to announce our happy news once Uncle Austin got home from his mission on February 9^th. During the month of January I started getting really sick. One time and threw up so hard I actually threw out my back! It worked out being a great excuse to give friends and family for the look on my face or for not visiting. Grandma Ragsdale insisted I needed some nice new walking shoes and bought me some. Then Aunt Erin set up a massage appointment for me to pretend I was her. That actually didn’t work out because when I went in, they had me fill out a general health form where I felt I should check the pregnancy box. Once I was all undressed and snuggled under the sheets, my masseuse came in and informed me that they had a corporate policy about not massaging during the first trimester of pregnancy. I had told him about my back and he knew I needed some help, so he said, “Look, I can’t give you a full massage but If I work on you for 20 minutes you just need to leave and act like you are really miffed about it. We will freeze your account so your monthly massages don’t expire and this won’t count for anything.” So he did! Unfortunately, I had to call Aunt Erin and tell her why her massage account had been frozen, so she had to keep a secret for a couple weeks!

Finally, Granna and Grandpa Graham flew up to Canada to get Austin and I actually stayed at the Graham house to babysit everyone while they were gone. I wore big sweaters and baggy pants the whole time. When they got home and Uncle Austin met your big brother Graham for the first time. (Daddy and I were excited to announce you especially because Uncle Austin had left at about the same time during Graham’s pregnancy and had never seen me pregnant.) I had made Graham a little shirt that said “Big Brother” and he was wearing that under his jacket. After dinner, Daddy announced that we had a present for Austin. We stripped off Graham’s jacket and with Grandpa smirking over his shoulder, Austin read it aloud. Granna’s face went from confused to surprise to ecstatic! I unzipped my jacket to reveal a tidy but well developed bump and everyone exploded! There was a lot of “I knew it! I knew it!” from Kayla and Bo and Grandpa just kept smirking like he had known all along.

Then day we found out you were a little girl was a lot of fun. Daddy came to the appointment with me and as soon as the nurse but the ultrasound on my belly he said, “Oh, that’s a girl!” The nurse said, “Well, I don’t know, we’ll see…” and she took her time doing all the other measurements before she finally got down to get a look. And sure enough! We both started crying we were so happy! Then we spent the drive home calling everyone to let them know.

I had a lot of hopes for your delivery Evelyn. For one, I didn’t want another C-section. I knew that would limit the size of family we could have and I knew it was better for both of us if I could go vaginally. I think my biggest oversight with Graham is that I wasn’t educated or prepared in anyway. I was determined to learn everything I could this time to give myself the best chance of succeeding. So I checked out every book the library had on the topic; natural birthing methods, VBAC helps and informations, and then I also researched the policies and procedures of the hospital so I could know what to expect and what to demand. When I was eight months pregnant I changed care providers. I had previously gone to an OB-GYN. She was nice enough, but I never bonded in anyway and she was only ever passive and even dismissive about my desires and chances for a VBAC. So I found a group of midwives that worked in a closer hospital. I know I was led by Heavenly Father. I have noticed through my life that when I need to go a certain direction, He opens it up to be the path of least resistance and things get settled very quickly. That is what happened here. I had called several midwife groups and there was always something wrong: they didn’t accept my particular insurance, they didn’t take on patients already 8 months along, or they didn’t work with VBACs. When I called this group, everything was a go and the gal that helped me was so nice and enthusiastic. She got me set up quickly with appointments to see all of the different midwives in the few weeks I had left. At my first appointment, I came with a long list of questions. But first, she just sat and listened to the story of Graham’s birth and what I wanted for your birth. Then as I went down my list, she answered questions I hadn’t even asked yet and everything was what I wanted! She was positive and enthusiastic about my chances and when she checked me I was already dilated to a 1 and 80% effaced. “Oh honey,” she said, “if you are like this at 39 weeks you’ll go into labor!” I came out of there singing! For one, it felt so nice to have someone listen, understand, and want to help me have the birth I wanted. And for another, my body was already doing the things it should have been doing to prepare! They also felt my belly and said that you wouldn’t be as big as Graham’s 8lbs 8oz. We were so excited.

As I researched and read, I learned about doula’s. They are hard to find and rather expensive but I liked the idea a lot. Then just a few days before my due date, a friend gave a recommendation for her doula and even called the doula that night to let her know I would be calling. The next day I called and she answered and called me by name! Her name was Hannah Reasoner and she agreed to meet with Dad and I the following night. We both loved her and she gave us a discount since we were three days away from the due date. Again, we felt that Heavenly Father was very involved in our situation. Hannah was also a masseuse and agreed to try labor inducing acupressure techniques if I went to 41 weeks.

The due date, September 5^th, came and went, but I was at peace. Somehow, I found a comfortable quiet place with this pregnancy and was content to wait for you. The Wednesday before you were born, I took castor oil and had my first real labor contractions till late into the night. It was so exciting! I had never felt real natural contractions and found I could deal with them wonderfully. Thursday I had a midwives appointment and they scheduled me for the fetal stress-testing the following morning to check up on you. Hannah came over that night and I had some great contractions with her working the pressure point. Friday morning I went in and they monitored your heartbeat for 20 minutes. I was having regular contractions but the closest they got were 7 minutes apart. They were also concerned that I might have a slow leak in my sac because I had so much discharge. If that were the case then they would have kept me in the hospital and tried to get my labor going. I didn’t want that, I wanted to labor at home. The nurse let me go home and get packed and pick up Daddy in case we had to stay. Then we came back for the midwife to check me. I was dilated to a 4 but didn’t have a leak so she said to go home and do whatever we wanted because you were coming regardless. Hannah came again that night and again I reacted well to her massage. Saturday morning, daddy checked me and we guessed that I was dilated to a 5 or 6. But, for some reason, I didn’t have as many or as hard of contractions that day as I had been having. Hannah came over again at about 4. Granna Graham and Kayla were freaking out that I was walking around at a 5 or 6 and they were an hour away so they showed up around 8pm. I also took some more castor oil after much gagging and griping…but still nothing was happening. Daddy was giving me a hard time because I was complaining about the castor oil so much. “It’s probably not that bad, it’s all in your head, stop making such a big deal out of it…etc.” So in empathy, he took a sip too. Hannah finally left at about 9 and Daddy and I went for a walk. We turned on a movie at about 11pm but about ¾ of the way through I had to pay attention to the contractions because they were picking up. I rolled around on the exercise ball, Daddy used counter pressure and Granna used some other relaxation techniques I had learned about. Then I started to feel nauseous during the contractions and it occurred to me that this was probably the result of the castor oil. So I went to the bathroom and the castor oil did its job. I am pretty sure this is when I went into transition. We called Hannah, (it was almost 2:30 in the morning,) and asked if she thought we should head to the hospital. She said she wouldn’t decide that for us but that she was on her way. My contractions didn’t stop of slow afterwards so that clued us in – this was it!

Granna suggested we try hydrotherapy with a hot bath. I was hesitant because honestly sitting on a hard surface getting soggy didn’t sound all that nice. But I was wrong! It was wonderful. The contractions really kicked it up a notch and yet I was able to deal with them and keep breathing…even though I started making a fair amount of noise. Granna said I was a lioness! I hadn’t let Dad check my since that morning because I didn’t want to be disappointed. But he checked me after about 10 minutes in the tub because I was starting to get a hitch in my breathing because I was feeling the need to push. Dad said, “uh, guys? I think we need to go. I can’t feel how big you are…I can’t feel anything…uh…you’re this big,” and he held his first two fingers about 5 inches apart. We agreed it was time so they helped me out of the bath and got me dressed. Every time a contraction came I had to grab Dad and just hang on him because my legs couldn’t support my weight. We made it to the front door and another contraction came and then my water broke – it sounded like a water balloon hitting a brick wall! I said, “There goes my water!” Then I think Daddy’s urgency doubled. He called Hannah and told her to meet us at the hospital.

It was pouring rain but we made it to the car and Dad drove very vast and broke all sorts of traffic laws. I, however, was very lucid. I kept saying, “Lee, slow down. Be safe. I’m fine. We are going to make it.” Also interestingly, I only had 2 contractions on the way to the hospital, and that was about 10 minutes drive. My body knew I was not in a safe place to deliver and it totally slowed down. Granna noticed and tried to get me to focus and keep labor going. I knew it would keep going though. I just wanted to get there safely and I was trying to not push because I could feel you in between my legs and said so. We finally got there but they wheeled me up to Maternal Observation instead of Labor and Delivery. I still don’t know why I didn’t protest here, but anyway. All the way in passersby would call, “don’t push!” like it was a hospital greeting. Then once we go up there, the Observation Nurse said, “Hi, what’s your name? And your birthday? Are you contracting?” Wasn’t that obvious? So they started changing me into a gown and Daddy felt the Call of Nature…or rather the castor oil! He dashed out just as the nurse looked under the gown and said, “Oh my goodness!” She held my knees together while she and another lady grabbed my bed and started shouting at people to move things and get out of the way as they ran to labor and delivery! “She’s crowning! She’s crowning!” I kept asking for someone to go and find my husband because he didn’t know where we were! Then everyone seemed to get there at once. Hannah got there, Dad found me, and Granna got in from parking the car. A midwife walked in and said, “Okay, grab your knees and push!” She tried to massage my perineum but your head was already there. Another nurse tried to put monitors on me but was pushed off (much to my triumph!) Dad pushed his way up to hold my hand and Granna and Hannah came up to my left side. Granna kept talking to me, “Estee, you’re doing it and you’re beautiful! This is what you wanted! And now you get to push – this is the good stuff. This is the fun part. You’re awesome!” She said I was smiling the whole time. And I truly was happy! Happy to have labored at home, happy to have it finally happening, happy to be doing it the way I wanted!! In about 4 contractions you were out. It was 3:24, Sunday morning. You were 9 lbs and 6 oz and 21 inches long.

The first thing I saw was your feet and I said, “Lee! Look at her feet! She’s got your feet!” You were bigger then we were planning on – your going home outfit came to your knees! They put you right up on my chest and you latched on and nursed for an hour. I knew they only needed to take measurements and things within the first hour so I said no thank you and held you and nursed you till the hour was up. (You nursed so well you actually brought my milk in the next day.) By that time the O.R. was ready for me too. So I handed you to Daddy and they took me out. Because you were much bigger then we were anticipating, because you came SO fast, and because you were my first in many ways, I tore badly. You Evelyn, however, were perfect. You had less of a cone-head then Graham! My perineum actually didn’t tear very much, but you tore the left side wall of my vagina as you came down. Whew! So, it ended up that I had to have a spinal block, an IV, and a catheter to get that fixed…some of the things I was trying to avoid! But it actually didn’t matter much; I got the birth I wanted. You came vaginally and completely drug free! Many of the nurses were totally amazed. An all natural Vaginal Birth After Cesarean. I did it.

So yes, Tyler and Abby are engaged. And what a wonderful engagement it is. November 20 is the big day and we are so excited. The past couple weeks have been challenging in the fact we needed to get our school stuff all ready. But we have had so much fun. Its such a blessing and I know now, of the reality of the plan of happiness. The temple is our goal and eternal happiness is our reward. Its well worth it I am thinking. I will get a picture of the rock that he has on my finger. He did a perfect job picking out a ring all by himself. Proud I am. I love him. He loves me. We will be a happy family. Next Graham gathering we will come up. love love love you all. Families are Forever :)

Wasatch Back Relay1

I know it is way late, but I haven't checked the blog for a while. What I dummie I am. I am going to start urging everyone to check it at least each day. I love it. Our big anxiety is observing the preparation for the big relay. Boy, I have to tip my hat to these kids who are doing the running. Some of the runs are soooooooooo difficult. I will just keep my fingers crossed and keep praying. Wish you could all be there to cheer and holler for our family. I am so proud of Dallas, Joni, Angie and Abby! Wow! An update from Duvall!

I just wanted to share a few photos and let you all know that we are all alive! We've been in our house for almost 2 weeks now...and thanks to Mom, we're almost "there"...thank you SO much Mom! So, here are a few photos of the last month or so...

Tyler's birthday party...or should I say Darth Vadar's b.day party! The kids had a great time helping me get the decorations. They were so excited to have a Star Wars party! We found these masks, and just couldn't pass them up! And yes, that is a Darth Vadar holding the "red light saber" candle too!
This is a photo of my little Ruby...in all her glory on our "patio" in the appartment. She loved going out to "play" in the backyard, which just consisted of walking in and out of the sliding door. She was awesome to never venture into the grass...until the day before we moved out! The grass was still a bit SOGGY and she was covered in mud...so wonderful!!

In this photo of Lucy you'll need to look at her lashes extra close...yes, she has put mascara on for the first time. I've been trying hard to keep her away from wanting to wear make-up but she is a girl and really wants to wear it! I let her use powder and that has been sufficient--until this day. She had been playing with her dolls in the bathroom-doing their hair and such. I didn't think anything of the length of time she was in the bathroom-she loves to take care of her dolls and does it all the time. So, she walked out of the bathroom one day and was just playing...and I looked at her...and her eyes were so striking! I thought, wow, she is beautiful!! Then I looked a bit closer...she had found some mascara that I had discarded earlier that day...and put it on! There was no mascara anywhere but on her lashes--she did an awesome job putting it on! But, then later as she was sad, she learned why little girls don't get to wear mascara!! Yes, it runs down the face!!

Anyway, just wanted to share and say hey! I feel like I'm finally getting back to "normal". I even moped and vacuumed the floor today-which means the boxes are less and less!! YEA!! Oh, and guess what, I am going to be published in another magazine in November!! YEA!!!! xoxooxoxox

Well hi! This is Shelby. I am currently finding ways to avoid studying for my anatomy midterm...For some reason I can't post on this blog so I decided to use my mom's name. You guys are probably all dying to know what's been going on with my life! I am doing spring semester at BYU. I absolutely love anatomy and pretty much live in the anatomy lab with the cadavers...SO COOL! If I didn't want to be a mom I'd probably want to go to med school. Just thought I'd put some pictures up so you guys can see what I've been up to!
Here's me and some cousins on conference weekend when Austin came up to visit. Skipped class to play Risk...I dominated...until Austin undermined all. It'll be nice to have him back to kill us in games at reunions again.

This is me and a bunch of my good friends wearing XXL BYU Faculty t-shirts. Probably taken in the early hours of the morning...we had so much fun together our last nights in Heritage!

Dallas' Concert

Just returned from another phenominol experience! It was the UCA Colage concert at the Cathedral of the Madeliene. Hooray for the UCA!!!!!!! It was just fantastic! Dallas we are so proud of you and the wonderful talent that you have. We are thrilled to have you a part of such an extraordinary and gifted group! The music was so difficult, I can't imagine how anyone could possibly learn it. Foreign languages and all. We were transported to a higher realm as we sat there feasting on this wonderful music. Thank you for all the hard work that you personally accomplished. Few know just how much effort it really takes to perform this quality of music with the expertise that the UCA perform. Another great thing is that we get a chance to hear it again tomorrow night. Congratulations and kudos to you, dear son! xoxoxo Mom

Hello dear ones! I wanted to take a few minutes and say hey! As most of you are aware--sorry that maybe not all of you are--but we are moving home to the Motherland on Saturday April 4th! I can't believe that our time here is over...I've got a lot of mixed emotions. It will be wonderful to be home--but this has become a very special home too! We love it. I cried my little eyes out at church today...so much love there! I will really miss the relationships I've made here-friends from around the globe...some we probably won't see again and that kills me!

Tyler has been in Seattle this week, we're counting the hours until his return! He's been in meetings and such, getting everything squared away for his return in a few weeks.

We'll be in temp. housing for about 6 weeks, while we patiently;) await our shipment of goods from across the sea! We're planning on coming down to Utah for a couple of weeks-at least the kdis and I spending a couple of weeks there. Right now it's looking like the last 2 weeks of April--so I hope we can get a get-together scheduled so we can see those of you that live there!

I can't leave w/o a few photos! We went to Frankfurt last weekend to the temple--we stopped somewhere before-but I can't for the life of me remember the city name! This beautiful building that Ty is posing in front of is a beautiful palace....BEATUIFUL inside! And one of the only buildings like this that we havn't been allowed to take photos in...bummer! Isn't he handsome!?
This next photo is of us at the temple in Frankfort. We stayed at the little appartments they have there next to the temple and had a great time. We did have a photo of our whole family but my eyes were closed...that is why you ALWAYS take at least 2 photos...always!

Euro Field Trip

I won’t try to recap the entire two weeks that Bev & Bo were with us in Europe – I would need a bit more space (and time) to write about it all. Needless to say, it has been a fun two weeks - we really packed it in. Thought I'd share with you the highlights from the last field trip we took this past weekend.

3: countries (Czech Republic, Poland, & back to Germany)
3: days
1450: Kilometers driven (~900 miles)
7: people packed in our little 7 passenger Touran (yes, you really can fit 7 people into this little thing)
1: Thule car topper - filled to max (especially on the way home)

Over 30: pieces of Polish Pottery we picked up real cheap in Boleslavic, Poland (the home of Polish Pottery). Lucky us that the US Dollar has gained about 30% over the Polish Zloty. I must admit the pottery was much nicer than the parts of the town – much of it was pretty run down, but we had a good time going from store to store and enjoying Polish pizza for dinner. We went to this small little pottery shop and met a super nice couple whose family business is making and selling pottery (mostly to the US). They gave us a personal tour of their facilities and that is where Jen and Bev found their favorite patterns. Such nice people. Here is a link to their website.

1995: The year the church building was dedicated in Gorlitz Germany, by President Monson and President Uchtdorf. This is where we went to church on our way home on Sunday. Gorlitz is on the border of Germany and Poland and has been spoken of by Pres. Monson in his book, Faith Rewarded as well as in a number of talks he has given (Thanks Be to God and Patience, A Heavenly Virtue). The spirit was so strong as we participated in sacrament meeting. This was the highlight of our trip. They asked Bo to share his testimony - and through a translator they were able to hear his strong testimony of the gospel. We met and talked with some wonderful people – and I came away with a great admiration for the pioneering saints who do so much in the small, remote branches of the church around the world.

For those of you who haven’t heard yet, we are moving back to Seattle on April 4th. Two years has gone by very fast (right Austin?). Looking forward to seeing you all this summer.

Hi everyone!
For those of your who didn't get it...we are prego once more! It will be mid sept. which means a long and HOT summer but we are excited.
Graham doesn't get it yet, still working on that. I am nearing the end of the first trimester - thank goodness. I never actually threw up with Graham but the nausea was constant and terrible. With this one I have thrown up, but I have been able to manage the yuck more. Go figure. (I know, "Maybe this means it's a girl!" you will say!) So we'll see!

We wanted to wait until Austin got home to announce it and it was a hard wait! For one, both fams live close by here, and for two I poked out almost overnight! sheesh. so we waited and fibbed a little and I made a little onsie with "BIG Brother" on it to announce to everyone and my mom's face was priceless! (sorry, didn't capture the moment dangit.)

But we are doing well and happy. Lee is a stellar student and Graham is getting cuter though more melodramatic! we love him. and we love you!

Landon sent us an interesting photo, reminding us of the conditions he is living in. He has been on the frontier, which is what the border is referred to in Mexico.

We really need to pray for Landon and James in Mexico. You may have caught some of the latest world news about over the border. The drug lords of Mexico are challenging the Mexican government. They are declaring an all out war in many states. Mexico cannot hire enough policemen, because they are either corrupt or dead. So, the national army is in the battle now. Recently some very violent occurrences have happened to create alot of fear. One of the more powerful opposers of the drug lords was found slaughtered last week, along with his family, including parents and children. 6 children were killed, and the drug lords don't just kill them, they mutilate the bodies.

Landon says his area has had several lockdowns in the past few weeks where the missionaries are asked to stay inside their flats.

I don't know if James has mentioned it, but Landon is up by the border, and things are very tense. Please pray for their safety. Their mom's and dad's are pretty worried. Then again, I guess you can't be safer than when you are in the service of the Lord.

So it warmed up over the weekend and we decided to go swimming in the pool. :)
I wish! Kind of makes you miss summer, huh? The best part about this picture is that the pool is on the patio and not the grass. Who wants to ruin a nice thick lawn with a blow-up swimming pool? Not me.

Top of the World; lookin' down on creation and the only explanation I can find...is the love that I've found ever since you been around; your love's put me at the top of the world. (sing along everyone) Who doesn't love the Carpenters???

We visited the highest peak in Germany - the Zugspitze. 3000 meters above sea level (can someone please convert that to feet...9 thousand something). If you can't tell from the pictures - it was VERY COLD. But seriously, what a view. According to Jen - one of the best trips we've taken since living here. It was really great.

You know your Dad/Grandpa has this fun hobby of feeding the birds on our deck. We see so many beautiful birds and it is so fun to watch them. They usually come and feast and then fly off to sit on the deck rail or in the tree, but there is so much snow on the rail and literally on every branch of the trees that it is hard to find a place to perch. Well this little bird found a lonesome, skinny little tiny branch and perched there for quite a while. Both photos are of the same bird but you can see his perch a little better in the second photo. Isn't it just the funnest?

Consider this location a spot for the 2010 LEG Reunion. The top picture the view from the back porch of our new cabin location in Star Valley, Wyoming. Six acres of paradise. The next shot is a summer time view of the big lawn - room for lots of tents, etc. There is a great creek - Swift Creek - that runs along the property. It has a great little spring-fed trout pond. The back of the property is contiguous to the Bridger-Teton National Forest.

I know, I know...it is a long ways from Texas. But, we are looking forward to many fun times with all of you!

Bad Car-Ma Poem

this is a poem by me that i made about dallas' bad car-ma!!!!

The day did not begin well.

I got up late,

with no time to stretch.

I barely even ate,

And I made not one sketch.

And as I was driving

that very same day,

I thought I was at peace.

But it did not go that way.

Sirens blasted my eardrums

As he told me what was wrong.

My license plate was expired!

It hit me like a Chinese Gong!

A little after that incident

My car had seen the worst

For when I had got back into it

I was certain I was cursed!

My iPod and some books

From England, those books were!

Plus a cool bag from Malaysia

Were all stolen, I was sure.

Once that day was over

I was back in a normal mood.

I slept at Grandma & Grandpa's

But I needed to go home soon.

As I made my way down the mountain

To drop some things off

I was heading around the corner

I slammed my breaks to STOP!!!

But I didn't stop fast enough.

In other words . . . I collided with another car.

We both skidded for a long, long time.

Both frozen, petrified.

And we both got our cars to stop

(We really both were fine.)

Sure, we were fine!

But things didn't go right

for my poor, so-called reliable

Silver Bullet, now an upright fright!

My Silver Bullet is gone now.

I really want to go home, but how?

I'll hitch a ride with Grandma,

she's always done me well.

And when she hears what happened today

Her face will probably swell!!!!

Bad Car-Ma.

The funny thing is the coincidence, right? When I returned from the UCA Europe Tour, in the summer, I had a bout with *Bad Car-Ma*. The morning AFTER I had arrived from being out of the country, I was (1) pulled over (2) sited for an expired plate (3) my car was broken into [an hour AFTER being pulled over] (4) my iPod (with all my interviews) plus books from England and a bag from Malaysia... stolen. I kinda laughed that day (when you're going to go batty).

Jump forward to 9 January 2009. I had slept at the Mtn Home, cozily received and pampered by Mom and Dad. I had already made one run to SLC, to fill my Dallas Palace with my personal belongings. I had moved them out, seeing as how I had had a renter for the 3 months of being away. Well, I was on my second/final run, back to the City of Salt. I was near the end of the dirt road - right where the first part of the pavement begins, near the "bottom of the hill". I was approaching the final corner... you know the one: a kind of BLIND corner that drops off to west side? I was in 1st gear, going slow, when neighbor Nicole Welsh came around the corner. I applied break pressure... and it happened.

After 17 years of driving the Hill, I finally became subject and victim to it's accidental-winter-nature. I slid down for about 150 feet, wheels locked and moving steadily into a crunch. We are both fine. She was really shaken up and weepy, but physically o.k. We had been wearing seat-belts and the force had been enough that my airbags deployed (I've never seen that done before!).

The irony is this: the night previous, I was picking up my car at Jones' place. I had commented to Dad about it being "Ol Reliable" and how it had been with me for so many years. A strange foreshadowing, b/c now it is totaled. No more Silver Bullet.

So... you see? I have Bad Car-Ma. Hopefully it's over, right?

So let's take a minute. And reflect. And think about that little guy and hope his new feather-wheels bring him swiftly to the big Race Field in the Sky!

What can I say..... We had a WONDERFUL time in Italy for New Year's! We loaded up the van on Dec 27 and drove 9 hours to Rome (the 5 Allens + Dallas & my cousin Aimee). What an Amazing place.....the Hotel...the sightseeing...the cathedrals...the food... This could be a very long post, but I will restrain myself and leave it at that (we took hundreds of pictures, but here are a few highlights). Call if you want more details (206) 331-3953

Bev n Bo 50th Party

To all siblings and spouses-sorry, no kids on this one

During our reunion this summer, Scott advocated that we all make efforts to go with Mom and Dad on a pilgrimage to the land of our forefathers - Scotland. We discussed it with Mom and Dad over Christmas holidays, and there was concern from our parents that due to national economic instability, perhaps it wouldn't be such a good idea. Of course, I am the first one to say" wow, the cost of this isn't convenient for me"...but then again, I don't when we could all do something like this again. I would like to do more....all it probably takes is planning and cash....sounds simple, huh?

Anyway, we have targeting August 1, 2009 to embark on a journey to Scotland-due to Mom and Dads' request. My company has its own travel agency, and there are several different types of tours....the packages include airfare to Scotland from the international place- New York. The cost would be roughly $1600 a person, including airfare and all activities.

I am including links to the journey itself. We are needing feedback from everyone in 2 weeks. The journey is a 9 day trip-and it looks like there is a lot to enjoy....

I realize that economic challenges hit everyone, therefore I think its crucial that we decide what we are going to do....at least it lets us prepare for a few months, save money, etc. I know at the reunion that Dad generously offered to help maybe those who can't totally swing it, but I feel strongly that everyone do all they can to prepare.

Also, Mom as also interested in a Book of Mormon cruise in October, or a Greece and Turkey cruise, etc...there is a lot to choose from. Also, renting a villa in Italy for a while was considered....perhaps next year??

What an awesome experience we would all have. Everyone needs to go...it won't be near as great if someone is missing, and I know Mom and Dad would appreciate it. Let's remember, this is for them.....I will be getting more information and sharing as I get it.

Sticking with Jones' "star-war themed title" I share the following funny, of this wk. I've started a sequence with the first *weapon* in kalari: LONG STICK. Um. Yeah. It's pretty much what it sounds like: me and my teachers grab these long sticks, a special kind of bamboo, and then we go about sparring with a crack-crack here and a crack-crack there, here a crack, there a crack, EVERYWHERE a crack-crack! Needless to say, I'm loving it. It's like my *jedi*/use-the-force light-saber training I did as a young boy, jumping on the trampoline, imagining myself as a Thundercat or with Luke and Lea is FINALLY having a place in this in the world. So, don't discourage young'uns that like to play swords,... they may very well use it someday. ;)

Anyways, Rajeef and I were sparring and it was during a morning practice. I stand at LEAST a foot taller than this wonderful, dark-skinned, white-toothed Indian wonder. As he is usually always laughing, once we get into sequences he is stone-faced and I follow suit: no time to smile while trying to kill your opponent.

The sequence lasts about 2 minutes, moving up and down the kalari pit. We lean towards one another, and with relaxed but focused energy send the stick flying and cracking more quickly with every practice. If you forget a move, there could be the unhappy incident of a sudden BAM to the head or shin or shoulder. Concentration on the here and now is important.

As we are sparring, I notice Rajeef is squinting and then dodging his head this way and that... the way someone would move their head if trying to move if sunlight were in their eyes. He was doing it often enough, that I made a small mental notice: an obvious advantage for me. But wait, we're in the kalari pit: there is NO sun shining in... what is he doing?

With a final CRACK we back away in lion posture and then stand and bow to each other, signifying the end of the sequence. Rajeef's glow-in-all-places teeth open in a wide smile and he points to the front of the pit where our clothes are stored, where the oil table is, and says:

"Dallas, you go use towel. You sweat. I cannot see. It get in my eyes."

Not only is the idea that one of one's personal body fluids (in this case, SWEAT) is FLINGING and FLYING around in wild abandon, hitting innocent passers-by without invitation, completely grossifying, BUT that it is also BLINDING them as well... well, that's just odd and sick. Sick-odd. Gross. Yuck. And stinky.

The truth (which some of you have heard from my typing finger-tips): I have NEVER sweat like I have here, during my kalari training sessions. I underscore past lines of text: I LITERALLY leave a trail of sweat on the clay floor and if I'm standing in one area for a few minutes, it begins to pool. Call me Swamp Thing. Call me Sweat Thing. But at any rate, for what happened between Rajeef and myself, I should be labeled with "thing" somewhere in the name.

Rajeef and I laughed for a few minutes. Danesh (the other teacher) as well. There is the now-standing joke that we are calling the weapon "sweat stick" instead of its ancient and proud, historical "long stick."

The moral of the story: sweating ON your teachers CAN give you a strategic advantage in your relationship to them. How do you think Luke actually ended up being able to take down his darkened, and plastic-made Darth-Father? You think it was the Force that actually allowed him to serve the final severing blow, do you? Or was it something else? Something more... "personal" ... something more "slimey"... But don't take my word for it. Skip to the chapter on your own DVD collection of that fitful but historical star-battle and see for yourself.

Elder Graham Squared! (You Gotta Read This)

Hey there family!
What an exciting and interesting week! As you now know, I am in Rio Bravo, working with Elder Moreno, he doesnt have to much on the mission. We are getting along great, and he is a real humble guy that has a great testimony – he just needs to share it better! But yes, we are working together in this rather large area, trying to have investigators in two branches, activating and reorganizing the registries (I am the secretary of my branch) and building and sharing the restored gospel. The Lord has blessed us a whole bunch, because we are striving to be 100 percent obedient, new investigators, friendly people, great lessons. Now its time to baptise.
You know that we had the awesome chance to visit the temple in Monterrey again, and give ear to two apostles of our Lord. We woke up at 3 in the morning to get there on time. Once there, I was in the presence of someone very dear to me – Elder James Graham. I saw him, he looks very much the same, and gave him a big hug. We were both pretty much speachless, in english and spanish. But we made our way into the chapel at the church building there, and by a little miracle I sat two seats next to my dear cousin. We sat and read scriptures, and I couldnt believe what was happening in that moment. Elder Neilson and Elder Scott wanted to shake our hands individually. Elder Graham and I stood shoulder to shoulder his arm wrapped around me, we waited until the moment when Elder Neilson shook our hands asking the question – are you two related? Elder Scott is short but powerful, and speaks beautiful spanish. We were instructed, then had us leave quite too fast. I said goodbye to Elder Graham, I couldnt record it because they told us we couldnt bring cameras. They didnt tell that to Elder James, so we got a picture! I also did see Elder Heftel, but I seriously did not recognize him until I looked at him for about 5 minutes. It was great to see everyone!
Then we headed home and watched an amazing cultural event that was held in Mexico City in a stadium called Azteca – one of the biggest staduims in the world! It was a phenominal event, and both President Monson and Eyering were there presiding. It threatened rain, but President Monson said yesterday that he said a prayer to God asking Him that it would not rain on the show. Everything went perfect. It went through the story of the Nephites and Lamanites, then through lots of history of the united states of Mexico, lots of acting and TONS of dancing – it was amazing, and I loved every minute. They also had a great orchestra and chior – and then the missionaries came out. I dont know if Elder Bamgartner was in there, but there were hundreds I believe. Thousands of people put a lot of work into that – it was a testimony booster. I love every seconed I get to hear President Monsons voice – because I know it is the voice of the Lord.
Then yes, we watch both sessions of the dedication of the Mexico City Temple. Wow. How blessed am I? To hear several talks by apostles and prophets. I was touched by the principles that were taught. I know how real the plan of Salvation is – every now and then hundreds of memories flood into my mind at once, and I know they are full of purpose. This life – it is so precious. And it is part of an amazing plan. I wish I could recount the experiences I have had this week – people finding purpose to their life and realizing the beauty and necessity of the Book of Mormon.
I now hold temples in the highest regard. I very anxiously await the happy day where Ill take my future wife there. We will be sealed. Even death cant stop it. I will be with my family.
I cant, cant express my love for every single one of you. There are always difficulties, always challenges, especially right now. But we´ve got our family. I seriously dont need anything else. I look forward to hearing your voices this upcoming month.
Yes, I am happy and healthy. This week was way to freakin fast. The past two days were a blur. Its getting very cold here. Its cold but there is no snow, just dust. Cold and dusty. Some sort of insect egg broke open in our house and literally flooded the floor with millions of gnats. I swept them up and made a disgusting pile. I breathed in gnat wings. I cleaned a bathroom that hadnt been cleaned in years, The streets flooded once again, saying hello to me. I lost my bike pedal and my one brake doesnt work. The back of my shirts are stained with mud flipping up onto my back. Our branch piano is so out of tune that its difficult to pick out the song being played. Me and Elder James Graham switched name tags! The dogs hate missionaries. Our branch president doesnt live in the branch boundries. Whew.

My New Glasses

Lilly has taken up drawing. She loves it. I am not kidding when I say she will sit for up to an hour. I can't remember all my other kids and the age they did things, but I think 22 months is pretty young for such an interest. I might not remember well though. I bought her some washable markers and she goes to town several times a day. She takes it very seriously. She gets her face right down by the paper. I will have to scan some of her great work someday. It is really funny actually. We love it!

Just wanted to share some of our Halloween Fun! We got home from a day in Munich (Hard Rock Cafe for dinner:) love it!!) and ran to grab our costumes and run outside to trick or treat. We learned how to say "it" in german...i can't spell it right, but phoneticly it sounded like this
"zoo-sus or-na-zours" and that my loved ones is how they are saying their version of trick or treat. We are really happy that our neighborhood even had trick-or-treating, celebrating halloween in germany is only about 3 years old!! Anyway, we had some fun! Check out my cute super heros!!
We had an incredible hulk...

Spiderman was in the house too!! She wore that mask all night, handing out candy and so on....she got a lot of words said to her that she didn't understand...she was in heaven!!

We've had Bruce and Jan here for the past week, we're dog tired from all the fun and sight-seeing....but it's been great. We have a place to stay folks, and LOTS of places we still want to see...you could come see them with us!! Love you!!!

We paid a visit Pack's Pumpkin Patch out in West Farmington last week. It's okay for a pumpkin patch in Utah, I guess. It's just so hard to compete with the ones we visited in Virginia. The day before I headed out, I stopped by Pictureline - the camera shop I do a lot of stuff at. My digital SLR has been acting up lately. They take a look at it and as they are going to charge me for cleaning it, they end up saying, "Um... your camera is on its way out. And... don't worry about the cleaning charge. It's free."

So, I didn't bring a digital with me. So funny. And ironic. I have my old trusty Canon AE-1. Film. Going to do this whole thing in film. So, that is why there is no photos. What fun is a blog w/o photos?! I know!

But, I'm here. Pleasantly sweating. Listening to hundreds of car horns as they zoom by the internet cafe. I have come into town today, to visit a bank, buy some water, and do a little internetting. My fellow student, Sanja, is working on a paper she has to have done before she leaves for Chennai in the morning, so we made the rickshaw ride here for a few hrs.

Speaking of rickshaws: you all need to try one! Just get two wheels, a few planks, some handles from some poles or something and then get your kids out in front and have them pull you around! What a great cultural teaching experience! I was reading how India was introduced to the rickshaw from the Chinese, in the later 1800s. They are auto rickshaws here and I can come into town for about .75 cents.

India is colorful. Dirty. Sacred. Mystical. Warm. Wet. Load. Quiet. And by the sea.

I am doing a physical training here, for 6 wks. It's called KALARIPPAYAT. It's an ancient martial art where you do sequences and postures taught to you by your guru and it is a beautiufl thing to watch!

Everyday I wake up at 7:00a. By 7:15a, Ramesh (our teacher) honks the horn and we run out and pile into a tiny van. We drive for about 15 minutes to the Kalari ... or "the pit." It is a clay rectangle pit, dug straight into the earth, in the jungle. It has a thatched roof and clay walls and a clay floor. There is incense burning on all four walls as you descend into the pit a few steps.

I pull off my towl and I'm wearing a tiny, white loin-cloth! So funny! Then, we put oil all over our bodies. This oil helps our muscles heat up for practice, so we can be flexible and limber. The oiling takes about 10 minutes. We put it EVERYWHERE and we look very shiny when we're done.

Ramesh (our teacher) then starts commanding us to do certain forms and sequences - stuff I've been practicing for a number of months. But b/c of the climate and the oil and the plain rigors of the practice, I IMMEDIATELY begin sweating. It is a joke now, but I literally leave a trail of wet behind me b/c my body is perspiring so much. Just yesterday, my teachers were laughing b/c my body was emitting so much steam. They said, "You are FIRE!"

We kick. We lunge. We hold squatting postures. We fling about. All the while, in bare feet and bare everything else. You would see it and think this is something from the ancient days of India. Our teacher, Ramesh, is shorter than I am but has been doing this his entire life. In fact, that is all he does: teaches Kalari. He is very strong, very disciplined, but you get him out of the pit and he is like a smiling school boy: very nice and charismatic.

There are 4 students here, right now. Me and Aubri (a friend of mine from SLC) and Sam and Sanja. Sam is from Britain but hasn't been there in 3 years. He's been living in Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia. Sanja is Yugoslavian by birth but lives in Austria. She and Sam are really fun, interesting people and we all get along very well.

Yesterday I started Long Stick. Which is exactly what it sounds like. I'm starting to use a big long stick and cracking it against my teacher. Its hard trying to remember the hand positioning, the movement of the feet, keeping your body at the right angle, etc, but they seem to think we are doing well. In fact, after the first day of training, our guru - Sherifka - said we had really good teaching. They are throwing lots at me and Aubri. And we are picking it up as fast as we can.

Practice goes until about 9:30a and then we go back home. I walk directly to the beach, which is about 50 yds away. It is the Indian Ocean, but more directly the Arabian Sea. The water is deliciously cool - and not too cold. Just right! I soak for awhile and then walk back to the cottage.

As you walk into the cottage, Lakshmi (our cook) has prepared a home-made Indian breakfast! There is always more than we can all eat. I especially like it when she makes watermelon juice, grape juice, or a banana shake. All the ingredients she uses are very much from here. Nothing we have or are eating is anything like home. Except the pancakes... they are like Swedish pancakes mom fixes. We drink hot Kumen water or Chai and get tired, real fast.

We get up and shower, tape our feet, and either snooze for a while or pull out a book. We have the rest of the afternoon to our leave with another meal around 2:30p. I have been doing lots of reading. Some recommendations:

At 4:00p, Ramesh is honking the horn again and we repeat the drill over, all suited up in new, fresh loin-cloths (except the girls, of course, they are very much covered!). We do an hour practice as eventing approaches and then peel back home around 5:30p. Jump in the Sea. Shower. Sit down and eat.

The evening is VERY chill as we sometimes play cards, Sam strums his guitar on the porch, Sanja meticulously goes at her Sudoku book and Aubri kinda flitters around doing all sorts of things. I have been working on my new bird-design idea/company: Red Fred Bodoni and his Fine Feathered Fonts. I'm happy to say I have some great things planned, made, designed that I hope to launch after the first of the year. I'm so glad I have my lap-top, even though the power goes out nightly at a certain time, and we go about lighting the candles as if nothing has happened.

I usually hit the hay around 9:00p. Pretty tired. We repeat this. Over and over and over.

There is a lot of time to think. To listen. To try and understand myself more and better. To think about suffering and sanctity. What would you do if you had nothing around you that reminded you of your home or the people you came from? Where does your mind drift when you realize you are just a little piece of sand on vast coast of millions of other sand particles? The waves seem to be hypnotic as they caress my thoughts at night.

I find myself grateful. Happy. And at times, longing for the companionship of those I hold close to my heart. I would love for them - you - all to be here, just b/c it's beautiful and like nothing we know back home.

Yesterday, I was fed by a stranger. There seems to be nothing more kingly than to be provided for by somebody that has no other intention than to simply give. It made me think of my parents, of all parents, of the nature of love towards others. I was walking by a coconut grove and a man had some young boys scamper up a tree and drop me a coconut. I drank the fresh milk straight from the coconut and just sat with the 3 of them for a spell. Hardly a lick of English escaped our lips, but we understood the connection of sharing and caring.

I decided to write this lengthy post b/c I am not in frequent contact at all, but wanted to give you an idea of what life is like for me right now. Very simple. Very basic. Very sweaty! :)

I love you all. Love reading about the Elders, the kiddos, and seeing Doug and Angie's heads on those AMAZING bodies! Please know I think about all of you and pray for you. Thanks for your prayers. They do my body good!

Landon sent us a few pictures yesterday, and a great sound file. I have sent the sound file to mom, since I can't attach it here, and she will send it out. You need to listen to it. He is totally south of the border now...

Here are some fun pictures of Mexico, and some of the people he loves.

By the way, a couple that he found and taught in his prior area, who were ready for baptism except for getting married, have now been married and baptized, and are moving toward the temple. He is hoping for the experience of going through the temple with them before he comes home, like James and his beloved family.

He mentioned that the word is he will be a senior companion on this next transfer, and he worries a little about the language barrier. However, I think I reads and speaks the language well. On occasion he says he has to ask people to repeat what they say, but that is fine.

He also says the girls there try to touch his blue eyes. They are somewhat of a novelty.

Oh the Places You Will Go

Well, he is off again. This time to India. We will take him to the airport way early on Wed. morning. What an adventure he is going for! Makes me pretty nervous and yet excited for him. It is just that I will miss the communication with him via phone and probably won't get much e-mail. We will see. I helped him today for a while wrapping up some loose ends and cleaning up his flat for the person who is going to rent it. She came by and I had a chance to meet her. Totally impressed with her. Dallas has boxed up lots of his stuff and has found a corner in our "loft" (don't know why we call it that, but you all know what I mean) He is spending his last evening with his friends at his house eating goodies, etc. I just hope he can use the internet while he is there. I love the way that we can communicate so promptly with this wonderful tool. Let's all join as a family and pray for him as he leaves for several months. He will be ending up in Germany with Jeni and Tyler, which will be wonderful for him and for them. I think I will be able to relax when he gets there. In the meantime, my worry buttons are flashing non-stop. But yes, I know he will have a grand experience and have lots of stuff to tell about when he returns. So Dallas, please know that we will all miss you terribly and will be praying for your safe travel and for a wonderful time of learning and physical stretch. Please feel all of us gathered around in a group hug to wish you the best! We all love you tons!!! Remember and watch out for the weird food and all that. Family,

Well, it seems that life is in full swing, and we have been enjoying a beautiful fall season here in Utah. We love where we live and how beautiful it is. I decided to include a few pics of the kids....you will see Ethan in football glory-their team was pretty small compared to all the mutant kids, and we didn't even win a game. Ethan seems to have had fun. He played running back and cornerback..got to catch a few passes, make some first downs and had a bunch of good tackles...I was proud of him because he never quit and kept playing, even when he got hurt sometimes.

Scarlett is great....she is quite creative, and if we are not careful, will follow in the footsteps of her cousin Annabelle in writing prose....I enjoy reading her stories....kind of interesting where she gets her ideas.

Sasha is sprouting...no longer our chubby little "jelly bean"...she has turned into a "string bean". She finally lost a tooth, and it makes me sad to see her little smile change. She loves to read...read, read read.

Teage has become a full on monster....in good and bad ways. Ever since his buddy Cooper died, he literally hates being alone, doesn't like to sleep in his bed, and never lets Jodi and I out of his sight...kind of sad, because he is always talking of us leaving him....he used to be pretty independant-we'd find him downstairs playing by himself for hours....he is such a tough little kid-he loved going to Ethan's football practices and games and wants to play himself...We probably could've used his help this year

Jodi is wonderful as usual....what else can anyone say.....she puts up with me..

Savannah went to the dance with a bunch (about 20) girls. They don't go as a date so it makes it so that she goes even though she is not 16. She stayed and did all the activities they had besides the dance...She and her friend wouldn't step foot into the dance hall. It was gross they say. Itsn't that a shame that they can ruin the opportunity to have a fun dance....oh well. She had her portait done and watched a magic show and stuff like that. She looked awsome thought. She is quite the beauty! My pearls and shoes thank you very much. We did spend the afternoon doing hair between her and Mady. I think it looked like gold ribbone!

I use it's tools in my ISP business, and use it for several construction and real estate clients as well. I also like to visit my son in Mexico! I got these great pictures from Google Earth. At the end of a kind of strenuous day, I just want to again wish Dallas a very happy birthday. We had a good time at lunch today. To bad you couldn't have all been there. Joni, Jesse, Will, Mary, Nelson, Gina, Dad, Me and Dal. A great hamburger place a couple of blocks from Dallas' house. We just may have to introduce those of you who have never been there. ACME Hamburgers. Pretty swell. Then it was home and back to the peaches. Dad keeps going out every night and bringing in more peaches. I am starting to want him to say "that is al". Those he brought in tonight are big and beautiful. Not bad when you think the tree started by all of you guys tossing my peach pits over the back hill as I was canning. Pictures of Landon's Mission

I wish I knew how to better label these pictures, but oh well. The first one is of Landon with the stray kitten he and his companion adopted. It was drowning in a flood and they basically just took it home because they didn't want it to die. It stuck! Next, there is a picture of a baptism a few weeks ago. Landon is lifting one of two little boys of a single mother to his left, which they found. This is the family with no food or clothing. The Bishop has since helped her get on her feet. The three girls to the left of Landon were found by him on a very sweet spiritual day when he was working in another area. He taught most of the discussions, but they were golden, and they love Landon and follow him all over in church. The next picture is of one of the 3 little girls that were baptised that remind him of Sunee! He gave them all little CTR rings that Carolyn sent him in bulk, just for this purpose. They love him, and he loves them.
The next picture is of Landon's birthday cake! He is at the very humble home of his beloved Martin and Maria, who have been diligently studying and preparing for baptism. They are committed, but first need to be officially married by a justice of the peace in Mexico. The marriage keeps getting postponed, but they are committed for this upcoming Sunday for baptism. He will miss it because he was transferred! Take a look at the humble surroundings. They were thrilled to have cake!

Landon Transferred to Tamaulipas, Mexico

Thought we would share a note from Landon we received this week. He has been transferred out of a very humble, but very fruitful area, where we have worried about his health and safety, to the big city. He sounds very happy. Here is an edited version of a letter we received monday:

Oh My!
What a change! I am actually in the city of Monterrey…everything is different…There isn’t dirt on this keyboard!...There is the song FIX YOU from Coldplay ringing through the air! Its breezy and wet outside. Very, very nice and different.

But yes, I woke up at 5 this morning to pack up all the clothes that were drying in the line we hung in our house (it was raining.) I Got everything packed up, and we were in the Central with all the BIG busses at 8. We traveled for a few hours, and luckily got through a HUGE river that was covering the entire highway. We got to the Mission Offices, had a great reunion, and ate a bunch of food. It was really special and I got to see Elder McKell (from MTC) and Elder Farsnsworth (his first companion). In fact, Elder F is going to be my zone leader! I believe my district leader as well! I am way excited to work here. I still don’t know exactly where I will be going, but I will be with an Elder Cruz. I have heard good things about him. Today I was also able to talk to a new missionary that arrived from the MTC – from Boise - he was in the Salt Lake Mission as well. I listened to his broken Spanish, struggling to talk and understand. It was really neat to see exactly how I was!

I LOVED your letters! Thank you so much! Today is actually Elder Chios birthday, too! So two days ago, we organized a trip to the church with our investigators to watch the Restoration movie. There is also an oven in the church! We were very rushed, and Satan did everything in his power to slow us down. There were many things we did, and when we were in the church with our investigators – we tried the keys to open the door to the TVs…It would not open!!! We tried for hours, but gave up. We headed to Martin and Marias home, (these are wonderful investigators he will baptise as soon as they get them married....) and set up the TV. We had popcorn, Balloons, a spiritual moment, and CAKE! They were stunned to see candles that never go out! It was SOO hilarious! Hmm…didn’t make a wish though…probably because I was laughing so hard!

But bad news! I did not get your second package! Hopefully eventually Ill get it. And the family with Mercerez and the kids, do not worry to much. They have received some food and clothes from some members, and she knows what she has to do to persevere till the end. I am worried though, its very difficult in the situation she is in. Father will judge accordingly. But! I was able to see the beginning of the start of a wonderful strong family in the church. I baptized Guadalupe – daughter of Maria. It was a great program – but again she needed to get dunked 4 times! Elder Chio and I thought the second time was valid – but its all good. These people really aren’t used to water.

But yeah – they were touched by the sufferings of the early saints – especially Joseph Smith. I love reading scriptures with them! By far, it’s the healthiest seed I have planted in Reynosa. I pray that they will continue in happiness and faith! I feel really good about leaving – I have worked hard and the Lord knows it. Peoples agency has sometimes gotten in the way, but I am content with what I have done there. I like this feeling of peace that I have when I come home everyday, tired, tired.

But yes, thank you for all your love! I think about all of you all the time. I can feel all the prayers, and I am stoked to keep working! I said goodbye to Elder Stidham yesterday – that was tough. I know he will serve well and continue to add to the ward there.

Hmm, I really like changes, I think. It is eye opening, seeing missionaries leave and come. When all of us are together with President, I feel very special. Its an honor to be serving with so many great guys.

Haha, oh yeah, for my birthday, I will be eating all my butterfingers, my peach rings, and opening my very last present – a metal container? I honestly don’t know what it is. Other thing I am running out of eye stuff. I can buy other products, but Clear Care is what I like. I think all your stories of life are excellent. I can picture life there at the house. I am sad that I am missing so much. I am excited to learn more about Dads mission. I really don’t know many stories from his mission.

The hurricane completely missed us…I wanted at least a little bit of wind along with rain – but that is exactly what we are getting right now! Its all good. Here in Monterrey, there isn’t mud, there aren’t more dogs than people, there aren’t exploded sewers running in the streets, there isn’t as much dust. I am pretty excited. It will probably be harder to baptize, though. I don’t want that ´´thought´´ impeding me, though. That is just what the other elders say. It wont apply to me.

Mom and I had SUCH a great time in this store!! The jewels were too much to just walk arway from! And yes, we got our Venition masks too!:)

We trooped up to Rothenburg, and went to some GREAT Christmas shops..Kathy Wolfart here we come!! I loved having Mom take the time to read stories before bed! Myles was educating her about the movie Ratatouille, before she watched it with him and Lucy.

And now for the Ruby Tuesday part of your Tuesday...

Some photos of my little gem!! She is just about 7 months old and starting to move like crazy!! I noticed some little blisters the bottom of her big toes...the same spot on either foot. I couldn't figure out what would have given her those blisters! Then I watched her scoot herself along the floor...her big toes are the anchor that give her traction!! She's using that piggie to propel herslef forward! And since our floor is all tile or hardwood, she's going to have to create some tough piggies!!

So this is a photo I couldn't resist the other night. She was playing upstairs with me while I was working the other night...and she fell alseep...right on her little face!! It was too cute not to capture! Here are a couple photos of her in action. She moves across the room from one end to the other-and it's a long room!! She loves to play with little people animals...so cute!!
She won't let this one get away!!

Dear Family,

I am sure that many of you have either seen the news yesterday(locally) or heard from mom about a very serious tragedy that involved the 4 year old boy of our best friends, Ted and Sharon Mardesich down here in Saratoga Springs. Their boy, Cooper, was born 3 days ahead of Teage, and they have been the best of friends all of their lives. Cooper is often at our house playing, or Teage is at his, and if you were to see both of them together, sometimes seeing one is seeing the other-they are that much alike.

Cooper was struck at the end of our street by a 15 year who was driving the family van. We don't know why he was driving to school, but Cooper was with his mother and was riding his little bike by where the kids were waiting for the bus. Apparently, Cooper found himself in front of the turning van...and you probably can figure out how the rest of the story goes.

He passed away from extensive internal injuries - the accident was much like what happened to Abby years ago, where Cooper was run over twice-the boy accidentally backed over him as well.

We will miss him terribly. His parents represent the best of people. Ted is a counselor in our Bishopric and Sharon is the Stake Young Women's President. Jodi and I have served with both of them in other church callings as well, and they have always been the first to run to someone else' aid. Every time we have had trauma with our children-you guys all know about those stores-our other children stayed with them. Now, it seems they will have to let us carry them for a while.

Cooper was a beautiful, happy, and special boy...and our little Teage and Sasha are already feeling the effects of his loss. Ted and Sharon told us that they will need Teage around a lot-mosty to help with their son Logan, and also it will remind them of Cooper. I told them that will never be a problem.

I have spend some good time with my friend Ted, and he told me Coopers passing was such a positive, spiritual experience for him...it doesn't take away his pain right now...they will just greatly miss him, but now the challenge is living in a way to be together again.

I am also reminded at this time of another Father....who probably in agony, had to stand alone and let His Beloved Son die as well....not for any kind of accident, but to save the rest of His children. How grateful I am for the knowledge that our Elder Brother, Jesus Christ, died so we might all live again. What a glorious truth for all of us to rediscover. I have also thought how fragile life is, and that the time I spend with my wife and children are what is most important-we never know when one of us will be called Home, we just want to be ready. I have made a better resolve not to let the oddities of everyone I know bug me anymore-I know I have plenty of oddities. Hopefully, all of us can take the same challenge. We had such a great time at the LEG reunion with everyone, and I have marveled how the Lord has spared us the tragedy of this kind of loss so far....I know it won't always be that way.

I know that God is aware of us, and knows how we feel. Thanks to everyone for their love and support, and please keep Ted and Sharon Mardesich, and their boys-Ivan(13), Garrett(12) and Logan(6) in your prayers. We love all of you and look forward to being with you again.

Dear Family,
the time has flown, and Im more than certain Ill find myself unready to return one year from now.
its hard to understand. the times passing I mean. Im sure this isnt a "first" by any stretch of the term.but its cool, being here, and looking back. the views change in drastic ways.
Im serving in Monterrey Valle Verde.

my living conditions are great.
Like, I think about my old living conditions, from when I lived in utah. In perfect fairness my living conditions are in comparison pathetic. lacking. an observation I made when I ferst arrived to Mexico. However, worn a little by time and routine, I see them now as normal and very comfortable. No complantes on my part.Im chill.
(its not like we live in the house anyway, we are ALWAYS outside. so I suppose Ill be a happy camper so long as I have a bed to sleep in and a desk to read at. Thats a benefitial attribute. for me at least, who knows how the wife will take it someday....)
My comps name is Elder Mata, hes another dying missionary. Again, Im fine with him. Hes doing the best he can. Its been neet, I adopted this idea that people always do their best about.....2 years ago, maybe it was 3 years ago! To continue, It was very easily said before my mission. sure, "everyone does their best" I would say. but when youre in a companionship with rules expectations both phsyical and spiritual, that term is one that has to be faught for. If I wish to hold to that idea, I have to search on a daily basis to establish its reality.
Hard and very rewarding. my comp is 6 weeks short of his departure, and its been hard for me to watch his focus deteriorate and fade. He will have very little difficulty adjusting to "normal life" again. I feel safe saying that he will not flinch when he is released as a missionary.
Its hard, its sad, its draining, but then again, he is doing his best.
I should also mention that in the short time that we have been companions (8 weeks) hes lost a 23 year old cousin to birth complications, his dad (hefting somebody elses heart) has had multiple close calls, being rushed to the emergancy room on several occasions, family not expecting his return. And unfortunatley, my companions 27 year old sister (and single mother of 2) (who has also had heart complications) had a horrible car accident 2 weeks ago, and is now in the hospital because the central part of her brain has stopped its functoning. and she is not expected to live for much longer.
I have had to hold my comp 3 times in this change, as he would just sob and sob for his families ill fate.
I was never prepared to deal with such heavy emotional challanges. Ive been thrown into those "what can you possibly say?" situations more times than I ever expected.
Its an understandable situation. I pray for my comp.
Im am not yet a senrior companion. My health is wonderful. Im just really healthy.
The work is wonderful, we've been baptizing every other week now for a while.
Its all been a very interesting learning experience.
watching people commit, and then watching what they do when things get hard.
Its all wonderful.
we had a powerful baptism yesterday.
we've seen miricles with him and his family. his wife was supposed to die, and my comp gave her a blessing, and as the husband took on the commitments and preperations for baptism, she has been healed and restored in health.
its more than I can describe in words.
as if his sacrifices to God we're returned as blessings in the curation of his wife.
it was this fantastic parrallel. they were seperate in location but linked in spirit almost.
based on his actions, her phsical state grew stronger or was weakened.
really cool.

life back home sounds fantastic.

Im very happy where I am right now.
Very comfotable.

Dont be surprized if I end up asking for an exstension in time.

These are some pictures of Landon contacting with some youth in his Stake. He and his former companion have been planning this Stake Youth Conference from some time, and it finally happened. Some 50 youth from 2 stakes, split up with 4 companionships and contacted for a day, finding inactives, etc. Said it was really fruitful. Check out his smile. He looks happy, eh?

Alpine 4H Camp Memories

Dearest Graham Clan

Carolyn and I just returned from what has been a wonderful weekend at the Alpine 4H Camp. Some of you know that when we were first married, and looking at family pictures, I saw a picture of the Alpine girls camp and thought we were looking at my pictures.

As it turns out, it was Carolyn's pictures. Her family, the Robinson Clan (through her mother Jean) settled Afton and Freedom, and had yearly reunions at the 4H Camp the week before the Armstrong reunion....for years!!! Neither of us have been back since we were teenagers.

This year, we had committed to attend the John Robinson Anne Gregson Reunion. The Root of the Robinson family that joined the church. John Robinson was our pioneer. It was a wonderful experience for Carolyn and I to take our own kids to the place where we had so many wonderful memories. A few things have changed, but mostly, it was just like stepping back in time.

One of the great surpises was to see our cousin, David Bednar!!!! He married into the Robinson Clan like I did. We walked in the old hall, and I said to Abby, "Hey, there is Elder Bednar!!!" We literally sat at his feet. We were on the front row, next to the SAME OLD PIANO!!!!!----and Elder Bednar was our closing speaker at the program on Friday night. He was nearly standing on Sunee's toes!

There was a hush as he spoke. I felt like I should take off my hat in that spot. He said some profound things. Speaking about the John Robinson Family History, entitled " A Legacy of Honor", he asked us a simple question " Are you bringing Honor to their Legacy?" He spoke of this for a time and then stated something very profound. I will try to remember it.

He said "It is my witness that all the keys of this dispensation are on earth. I witness that the hearts of the Children are turned to the Fathers, and the hearts of the Fathers are turned to the Children. I am a witness of the keys to the sealing power. I do not know if all the keys to this dispensation have ever been present at this place, but I bear witness to you tonight that all the keys to this dispensation are present in this room, right now. I hold them, and I bear witness they are real...."

After the meeting, Carolyn and I, Abby and some of the other kids got to talk to him for a bit. This picture is obviously special to us.

Pursuit of Happyness

I just wanted everyone to check out this pic I got at my company's tradeshow last week in Las Vegas. Chris Gardner, the man on whom the movie" The Pursuit of Happyness" was our keynote speaker and I got to meet him personally and discuss his life story...quite simply, an amazing person who gave a great message to people. It was essentially this: All the material gains he has had, the triumphs and defeats in his life, nothing was more important to him than breaking the cycle of absentee fathers in his family....nothing is more important than his son, and knowing who his father was.....basically told everyone that nothing else will matter if you have failed in your home"...he got a standing ovation for that one. After we spoke, he told me to "show him the love, brotha"....and he gave me a big bear hug....
